Makadara MP George Aladwa has come to the defense of betting firms in the country, saying that the government should come out clear on the measures against the betting industry.

The legislator says that it’s the role of the government to come up with proper rules and regulations that will provide a level playing ground to all the companies.

” Sportpesa and Betin has provided employment indirectly and directly to many young people in this is the same industry that has been working directly with the communities via there CSR initiatives.

The MP, who is the ODM Nairobi County chairman and also eyeing the Nairobi Gubernatorial seat has further claimed that criminalizing companies like sportpesa will heavily affect local football.

The company sponsors the Kenya Premier League and most importantly Kenya’s two most successful football clubs-Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards.

The firms are among 19 betting companies, 13 casinos and six lotteries that risk closure after the team constituted to review their licenses failed to green-light their operations in the country.

The companies also risk having their senior non-Kenyan managers deported in the crackdown.

This comes a little over a month after the constitution of a multi-agency team to probe the licenses of all betting and gaming companies in the country.

The firms are said to have failed to prove that they were tax compliant as required by the Betting Control and Licensing Board (BCLB
