Babu Owino dismisses proposal to scrap Nairobi County as empty talk

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has told off Kericho senator Aaron Cheruiyot over a proposal to delist Nairobi as one of the 47 counties.

Babu has told the senator to stop wasting his time on things that have no legal binding and geared towards downplaying the benefits of devolution

“He does not understand Nairobi very well and that is why he is trying to come up with imaginary stuff about the capital city. He needs to read the law very well,” Babu said

The senator in his proposal argues that the capital is a cosmopolitan area with far more advantages than other counties and should not have its own budgetary allocation from the national government.

His proposal further advises that the county should be dissolved to enhance better management, utilization of resources and planning because it is the country’s focal point.

But according to Babu, such thinking is fueled by lack of information on the intrigues and realities of life in the capital city beyond the Central Business District(CBD)

“ Some of these people do not know Nairobi beyond the CBD and the industrial area. They have no clue about life in Mukuru Kwa Reuben,Mathare,Kibera and Dandora. They should come for a free ride around the county to understand why we need more devolved funds,” Babu added.

The MP says that the county has registered tremendous development since the inception of the devolved units.

He adds that delisting it because of its cosmopolitan nature will also mean that Mombasa,Nakuru,Kiambu and othe cosmopolitan counties should be scrapped as well.

Other leaders who have come out strongly to oppose the proposal are Nairobi senator Johnson Sakaja and Nairobi County Assembly Majority leader Abdi Guyo.
