Counties to benefit from free fistula Safari’s medical camps

Amref Health Africa in Kenya has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the First Lady’s Beyond Zero Secretariat to manage the fistula component of the First Lady’s medical safari camps.

Under the agreement, Amref Health Africa’s role during the medical safaris will be to create awareness and mobilization for uptake of free services, conduct free fistula repair, provide post-care for patients, and provide one to one counseling.

The first safari will be held this week at the Narok County National Stadium. Other Counties pre-selected for the first phase of the medical safaris are: Narok, Kilifi, West Pokot, Wajir, Kisumu, Machakos and Bungoma.

Amref Health Africa in Kenya, Country Director, Dr Meshack Ndirangu said the partnership was in line with its ‘Restoring Her Dignity’ campaign which aims to increase awareness about Obstetric Fistula and raise funds for reconstructive surgery for women suffering from fistula.

“Obstetric fistula is as a result of prolonged or obstructed labour without timely access to an emergency Caesarean section. It is one of the most devastating consequences of neglected childbirth and an example of health inequity,” said Dr Ndirangu.

The Beyond Zero Medical Safari focuses on the repair of obstetric fistula including their re-integration of women and girls into their communities; registration and assessment of children with mental illness or intellectual impairment; enrollment of pregnant women into the Linda Mama NHIF program; eye care for older persons; screening of cancers including provision of routine services such as immunization, HIV testing and counseling.

The beyond zero initiative championed by the first lady seeks to aid in the health problems of mothers and children around the country.

The beyond zero Strategic Framework 2018-2022 has nine areas of intervention that form the focus of the First Lady including Promoting access to quality maternal and neonatal healthcare services and advocating for repair and reintegration of women living with obstetric fistulae.

Amref’s fistula work through its obstetric fistula program is getting recognition for quality services and as a flagship venture to restore the dignity of affected women.
