Greenpeace launches new tree planting initiative for school children

By Jacktone Lawi
Greenpeace has launched a tree planting exercise that seeks to inculcate tree planting culture in children.
This according to Erastus Ooko, Greenpeace mobilization officer, will enable the children to understand the benefits of tree planting at an early age and prevent future deforestation.
The initiative saw the opening of a new environmental garden at Loreto Girls Msongari Convent and St Marys School.
“We started this planting day for kids to enable them understand a need to preserve our environment from an early age” said Ooko.
The program will first start in Nairobi before extending to other schools outside Nairobi.
He says that If the present generation was enlighted about the importance of trees on the environment the country couldn’t be grappling to achive the 10 per cent tree cover.
“ If the present generation was enlighted about the importance of trees on the environment we would not be having people encroaching in the Mau.”
