Lawyers attached to Law Society of Kenya (LSK) took to the streets on Friday to protest against delays in land registry caused by a land reform initiative digital system dubbed Ardhi Sasa.

LSK advocates in conjunction with the  Institute of surveyors of Kenya members begun their march from the Supreme Court to the Ministry of Lands office.

Ardhi Sasa, a land reform initiative that was launched 3 years ago with the aim of enhancing service delivery has been cited to be marred with many challenges which has resulted to delays and inefficiencies in service delivery.

Adressing the media,Vice President LSK Faith Odhiambo stated that Ardhi Sasa inefficiencies have resulted in adverse consequences such as inability to conduct  searches and verify land ownership records and land owners inability to access credit through loans from banks and saccos.

“Banks, Saccos and financial institutions are unable to disburse credit with an estimated amount over 100 billion in loans frustrated due to inability or delay in registration of charges.” Odhiambo stated.

Principal Secretary, State Department for Lands, Nixon Korir who received the protesters at his office in Ardhi House promised to resolve the inefficiencies of the Ardhi Sasa System within 60 days.

“We have established a team that  is enumerating the challenges and proposing solutions to the challenges affecting the functionality of the system.” PS  Korir said.

Korir also indicated that the team will rise to unclog pending files in the ministry that have delayed transactions worth hundred of billions.

Law Society of Kenya alongside the Institute of Surveyors Kenya demanded that the Ministry of Lands undertake a thorough audit of the Ardhi Sasa system to establish what works out and what does not and the remedial measures while including the relevant stakeholders.

Ardhi Sasa, the National Land Information Management System was launched by former President Uhuru Kenyatta on April 27, 2021.

The system is a digital land resource management platform designed to enhance the security of land records, speed up transactions and curb fraud.
