Meet Daniel Yumbya: The Man Driving the Health Change in Kenya

The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC), Chief Executive Officer Daniel Yumbya

Daniel Munyao Yumbya is a name that you may be familiar with following his prominence as well as experience spanning decades in the medical and dental regulation arena.

Mr. Yumbya is the Chief Executive Officer of the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council, a body mandated to regulate the training and practice of medicine, dentistry and community oral health as well as health institutions in the Republic of Kenya.

He is also the Head of Secretariat for the National Centre for Coordination of Quarantine and Isolation Facilities (NCCQIF), which is in charge of all Covid-19 quarantine and isolation centers in the country; and for the Ministry of Health (MOH) Technical Assistance Team for mitigation of COVID-19 Pandemic and Strengthening of Health Systems for UHC in the Counties.

Some may know him as Deacon Yumbya due to his passion of spreading the word of God in his free time while others may refer to him as Mwalimu, having been a Kiswahili teacher at the beginning of his career.

During a one on one interview with Mr. Yumbya for CEO Africa about his life and secret of his success; the KMPDC chief cited his success as fruits of God fearing, time management, teamwork, hardworking, determinations for success and zero room for laziness.

With the wealth of experience; he has learned to seek a bottom up approach to solutions by making great minds out of his juniors where they can make sole important decisions by training and walking with them collectively to achieve the company’s goal; rather than him being the sole decision maker and forcing work done without understanding their challenges, weaknesses and strengths.

He applauds his employees especially how they have been handling clients and even confessed that sometimes he has seen them make very good decisions to solve problems in instances where he could have advised them otherwise.

The regulator has demonstrated exemplary leadership that saw him awarded the Moran of the Order of the Burning Spear (M.B.S.) on 12th December, 2018 for the role that he played and continues to play in healthcare regulation not only in Kenya, but in the continent.

Mr. Yumbya holds a Master’s Degree in Business Administration (International) MBA (I), (Edith Cowan University, Australia, 2011), and is currently pursuing PhD Management Sciences, researching in Health Workforce Regulation in private and public practice in Kenya.

He is a seasoned health regulator with a passion to ensure quality healthcare and improved patient safety.

He has served as a Consultant with the IFC/World Bank on Kenya Patients Safety Impact Evaluation (KePSIE) Project between 2016 and 2017 and is a certified trainer with Interpol on Pharmaceutical Crime.

Mr. Yumbya has been instrumental in the development and dissemination of policy documents nationally, in the East Africa Community (EAC) Region, in the African continent under the Association of Medical Councils of Africa (AMCOA) and internationally through the International Association of Medical Regulatory Authorities (IAMRA).

He is the current Chair of the IAMRA Membership Committee, a position he has held since 2017.

He is also a Member at Large representing the Africa Continent for IAMRA Management Committee from 2016-2018 and has been the Chair of the Finance Committee of the AMCOA since 2012.

During his tenure as a Member-at-Large representing the African continent, IAMRA Membership, collaboration and participation in AMCOA Conferences has increased considerably.

As a seasoned Health Regulator, Mr. Yumbya has on many occasions featured on various TV and Radio stations, print and electronic media advising Kenyans and health professionals on health matters, dissemination of the Patient’s Rights Charter that talks about the rights and responsibilities of patients, and has been in the frontline in the fight against COVID-19.

Mr. Yumbya is also the Chairman- Ukambani Professionals Forum where he has been mobilizing professionals from the Larger Ukambani Region and participation in the Community development matters.

He holds a Certificate in Executive Education on Leading High Performing Health Organizations (Strathmore Business School, Strathmore University, Nairobi, 2012), Certificate in Evaluation and Accreditation of International University Medical and Dental Education, (Nizhny Novgorod State Medical Academy, Russia 2009) among other qualifications.

Mr. Yumbya is the Chair, Board of Management-Kathiani Girls High School and a Member, Board of Management- Kathiani Boys High School.

He is also the General Secretary Africa Brotherhood Church; as position he has held for over 20 years.

When retirement knocks, he wants to leave the council with a strong human resource team that can carry on the mandate of the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council in efficient manner and to maintain world class regulatory status.
