Nairobi Women’s Hospital responds to claims of extorting patients

The Nairobi Women’s Hospital (NWH) board has denied allegations that the hospital was admitting patients and holding them at the hospital.

In a statement issued on January 3rd, 2020, the hospital’s Board of Directors said they’d noted with a lot of concern reports appearing in media suggesting that there is some “systematic approach by the hospital to unfairly generate revenue from patients.”

“Although we don’t believe this is the case, and in fact, it is antithetical to our foundational principles, we take these allegations very seriously and are conducting an internal review as well as cooperating with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentist Council as they carry out their independent review,” the Board said in a statement.

The Nairobi Women’s Hospital was put on the spotlight after WhatsApp leaked conversation claimed that the hospital was devising ways of generating revenue from unsuspecting patients.

 “We believe that good clinical practice makes business sense. We have put in place policies and processes to ensure the highest clinical quality standards are maintained in all our hospitals. We carry out regular quality audits through our quality and standards department to ensure compliance with our policies, processes and continuous improvement in areas where we find gaps. As a testament to the quality of care we pride ourselves in providing, our Adams Branch is accredited by the Council for Health Service Accreditation of Southern Africa (COHSASA), the only internationally accredited quality improvement and accreditation body for healthcare facilities in sub-Saharan Africa. The Nairobi Women’s Hospital has another six branches that are at an advanced stage of being COHSASA accredited,” the statement read in parts.

The Board also said that the Hospital is focused on improving access to healthcare services by lowering the cost of care. It also revealed to be the only hospital offering outpatient services at an affordable fixed fee per visit.

“At the Nairobi Women’s Hospital, our patients come first, and we are always open to receiving feedback from our stakeholders and committed to continuous improvements in line with our Quality policy,” the statement read.

The Nairobi Women’s Hospital started with one branch and has strategically grown over the years. Today, the hospital has nine fully-fledged hospitals in Nairobi, Kajiado, Nakuru, Meru and Mombasa counties providing a wide range of outpatient and inpatient services.

“Our key focus has always been to improve access to healthcare services by lowering the cost of care. We are the only hospital our size that offers outpatient services at an affordable fixed fee per visit. Annually thousands of Kenyans have been able to access care through our hospital courtesy of these cost lowering initiatives. Through our Gender Violence Recovery Centre (GVRC), we have brought back meaning to life for over 40,000 survivors of gender-based violence by offering free counseling and treatment at our hospitals,” said the Board of Directors.–
