Ngara ward MCA Chege Mwaura has been elected as the Nairobi County Assembly Speaker in an acting capacity.
Chege who is also serving as the majority Chief Whip was elected unopposed, following the withdrawal of two other contestants Mary Njambi and Mary Ariviza.
Deputy Speaker Kamangu Nyumu declared Chege validly elected as per the guidelines of article 178 (2)(b) of the Constitution and section 9 (4) (b) of the County Government Act.
The process was however marred with drama after the sudden appearance of Mary Ariviza who shouted that her name was being misused to endorse an illegality.
She had to be forcefully dragged out of the assembly by the Sergents at Arm.The speaker consequently announced her decline to be subjected to the voting process as an official withdrawal leaving Chege as the only candidate
The assembly had impeached former nominated senator Beatrice Elachi over corruption allegations.
Elachi challenged the impeachment in the Labour and Industrial Court where she obtained stay orders.
The court is set to make a ruling on Friday regarding Elachi’s case.
Chege who addressed the media in his officer after taking over said that assembly business has to go on despite the ongoing court case.
