Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has said that the Nairobi Metropolitan Service Director General to cabinet meetings is a good gesture from President Uhuru Kenyatta in his commitment to improve service delivery in the city.
The governor clarified that he has no problem with the move as long as all engagement will be done within law.
“It is a decision by the President and I cannot oppose what the President thinks is good for Nairobi,” Sonko said
The governor once again clarified that he has no problem with NMS and that the county is ready to allow full funding of the transferred functions within the confines of the law.
“This is something we have said that we are ready to do as long as we are provided with the legal framework through which we can do it,”
He said that it is important that the office of the Attorney General is given time to finalize on the legal framework through which the funding process can be carried out without breaking the law. Sonko said that he does not want to be held responsible in the future on any illegalities.
“We all know that after two years President Uhuru Kenyatta will not be in office and we don’t know who will be the next President and if they may want to revisit this issue,”
He added that once the ongoing talks are done to satisfaction of both parties and as per the Deed of Transfer of Functions, the NMS will be free to get all the funding for its functions.
